So...I've been considering coming back to dA, for several reasons--some of you have asked me directly and I'm lurking anyway.  But while further considering this and in the process of writing an advanced Two-Transform Method guide, I began to wonder: Am I obsolete?  I primarily use one of the oldest style of Apophysis flames, I have little interest in any other styles, my flames look about the same, and I haven't contributed anything substantial to the fractal/Apophysis community in about a year.  Due to this, I've hesitated to renew my subscription or actively participate on dA.  I have a batch of new renders I've worked on over the past couple of months, but I feel like I'm still not ready to come back.  Maybe I will upload a few deviations and see how it goes.

Regardless, I have unstored most of my deviations (well, the ones I like, so it's still over 350 works).  Thanks to server glitches, however, the deviations will not show up for some time.  I've had a few pieces unstored for over a month and a half, but they are still AWOL.  I'm guessing that the new servers installation will fix a lot of the problems.  I hope.

Oh, and everyone, when noting/e-mailing me for help, please be specific in your initial correspondence.  I get many "can you help me" generic questions about Apophysis and CSS (since when did I become the CSS guru?).  I don't know if I can help unless I see what the problem is.  I will generally be able to help, but it's not a guarantee, so I would like to know ahead of time what I'm getting myself into (it also cuts down on the amount of notes I receive).  Thanks everyone.  :aww:

Personally, I feel that that classic is almost always the best. This being said, you are in a class by yourself, and I enjoy your work throughly. I think that deviant art would be a poorer place without you here.

that is just my humble opinion. I hope you return.

I just saw your comment in passing: "Am I obsolete?" and I found that an interesting sentiment. I wonder if you really mean "Am I uninspired?". If you enjoy your own art, then how can you be obsolete? Do it for your own enjoyment, I say. If others enjoy your work too, then that's a bonus.

I actually did mean "obsolescence" in this case. In fractal art, innovation seems to be prized above all--the really "big" guys are those who push the application to do things other fractalists couldn't dream of on their own. While I do really enjoy my own style, I often fear that my gallery is nothing but a slew of redundant images. Further, I often see criticism towards those who do not diversify their fractal repertoire. One reason I find this question important is that I am attempting to sell my work. I worry that if it's stagnant, I might have a more difficult time selling pieces (fortunately, non-fractalists won't notice).

Thanks for the encouragement, though. :aww:

I have to admit that when I'm looking at fractals, the ones that catch my eye are the ones that make me think "Ooooh, I've never seen one like that before". There *is* a lot of repetition. I don't know if the tools lead you down similar paths, or if people are consciously imitating styles they like, but it's important to present something that comes from inside *you*.

I wonder how easy it really is to sell fractal prints? Fractals can look staggeringly beautiful to fractalists themselves, but would the general public really want to stick one on their wall? I've shown some of my pieces that I particularly like to my wife, and she'll bring me down a peg or two with comments like "It's a bit busy, isn't it?". Maybe if you understand fractals, you can see a beauty that isn't so obvious to others. I think a fractal print really needs to be designed with it being a print on someone's wall in mind. Good luck with it :)

Claire, I will tell it to you like it is: The reason you are so popular is because people like your art and more important - you.

Sure, you don't have any of the "new style" flames in your gallery, but honestly, who cares? If we were angry that you don't "update your style" we wouldn't keep coming back to comment on your page and to comment on your latest pieces. You have pursued the same types of flames since back when they were first pursued by fractal artists and one could say that you have perfected it. Nonetheless, you continue to bring new pieces and designs to the rest of us, and now your "old style" flames have become unique.

I have to admit, a lot of the new styles of fractals are not my cup of tea, and it is interesting to be at an impasse with my own preferences and the community's trend. You, like many other artists, have found your niche, and trying to break out of it should not be forced upon you. If you want to try new things, by all means, go ahead, but you have to understand that we don't want you to go against your will.

Please seriously consider coming back. I have found you an inspiration... I wanna make fractals like Claire's when I grow up.

Seriously, you've created a style all your own that others are trying ti emulate (me included) and not doing nearly as well... you are still the mistress there. And your resources are beloved by many... me included. Please don't let that monster, self-doubt, make you stay away.

Hugs,
Anj

I agree that you should be back. You've left so suddenly and while I was most admiring your work :D

Well, I don't think you should use the word "obsolete". You know, you may think you're using the oldest of flames, but the vast majority of people, like me, had little or no contact with Apophysis at all, and what you have to offer is a tremendous novelty to us.

Besides, as someone said, you may have taken something "old" and given your style at it. Style never gets old.
