Apophysis

This is the missing image from my latest deviantID. I thought I had already uploaded it, but I couldn't find this render anywhere.

Looking at it again, I can see why I didn't upload this piece. It's still a little too dark and the quality isn't where it should be. These other types of Julians are such a pain to render correctly.

I thought about putting this one in scraps (because everyone hates Julians now ;) ), but I think I will put it into the main gallery first.

This fractal has been featured in my news article:

40 FRACTALS: The very best of 2007

Have a happy new year! :party: :absolut:

For someone like me who just began playing around a bit with Apophysis, this is absolutely stunning. It almost looks like a Photoshop work and not a fractal render anymore.

Newbie question: what do you mean by saying "the quality isn't where it should be"? To me it looks fine.

Thank you! I have a tutorial floating around my gallery somewhere that shows how to make this style if you're interested.

Eh, Julians are notorious for being difficult to get good quality renders (there are a lot of transforms, combined with the use of the Blur variation). You get a lot of fuzzy and/or speckled parts. :roll: It's very annoying. Suffice it to say that there is a reason there is currently only one large Julian render offered for sale in my print store (this is the other one, offered at a much smaller size). If you download the full version, you can see some speckled parts in the dark corner sections. I could get technical as to why that happens, but I'll spare you. ^^; It's just a nitpicky thing that bothers me.

Yeah, I've read your Julian tutorial last night. I'll write a separate comment regarding it. :-)

Ah, I see. I didn't click the download link. I recently also rendered a fractal and was surprised that it also had this kind of grain in some parts, even at render quality 4000. Is it because the "particles" aren't dense enough at some locations?
Then again you always could fix something like that in Photoshop, but I guess that's not an option for you as you want to keep your fractals pure and un-edited, right?

:laughing: I tried to create unedited fractals for the longest time and eventually gave up. I try my best to get my renders as clean as possible, but it doesn't always happen. There are a lot of people that pride themselves on not using post-editing, but sometimes it is just too difficult to get everything worked out of a render. It's so much simpler to clean up gamma problems and brightness in an external image manipulation program. I don't know how I would edit the grain out of a render, though. :confused:

Ah yes, the joys of rendering. To put it in perspective, I generally render a 1280x1024 Julian with a quality at 10,000, usually closer to 15,000 (and it takes forever to render). I generally render everything else at about 6000-8000. And you had it mostly right. The particle issue is generally exacerbated by the gamma setting, where too much light is hitting less dense areas of the fractal. In Julians specifically, not only are certain areas being affected by gamma, which needs to be high, but also the commonly used Blur variations enlarge the particles, which furthers the problem. This why most Julians are very dark yet have gobs of "hot spots".

It's fun trying to get the perfect render. :roll:

FYI: the render at my workplace just finished. There is absolutely no difference in terms of quality between 128k and 512k. It's quite the opposite. In the 512k render there seem to be two artefacts. :o

Render time was 2 days, 17 hours and 44 minutes, almost 66 hours. :faint:

Regarding noise reduction: I don't know yet if it will work, but I've some ideas in mind and I'll check whether they work. If there's any success, I'll let you know.

Regarding render quality: yeah, it's quite difficult to achieve a flawless render. If you look at my latest deviation, that for example is a fractal I'm really not satisfied with the result (and it's not even a very complex one).
First, I rendered it with a render quality (RQ) of 4000. Very much grain in the corners. Today I rendered it again, with RQ 128000 (yes, 128 thousand :lmao:) and while it's a lot better there still is too much grain.

So, currently I'm rendering the same fractal again on the computer at my company. Guess with what RQ? 512000, haha! :crazy: :crazy: :crazy:

The settings I used for all three renders were 1600 x 1200 pixel, Filter Radius 0.8, Oversample 2.

Rendertimes (CPU is an Intel Dual Core with 1.8 or 2.0 GHz, afaik):
RQ 4000 -> 30 minutes
RQ 128000 -> 16 hours
RQ 512000 -> approx. 64 hours :laughing:

When I come back to my workplace on Monday morning the render should be finished. :XD: I wonder how big the improvement will be in comparison to the 128k render. :meditation:

The same fractal with the same settings and a RQ of 512000 would need about 250 hours to render on my computer at home (AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz). :faint:

Granted there are a lot of JuliaN's out there, but... hey... each submission should be judged on it's own merits. I really appreciate the clarity you achieved on this one.
Hugs,
Anj
