Iterated function system fractals generally resemble natural objects--such as leaves, lightening and snowflakes--or general fractal structures like spirals. Despite these traditional forms, over the years I have attempted to create a "megstructure" piece. Arcology is by definition a self-sustaining large structure intended to support a masssive population. This idea of merging the natural world with engineering (taken here as geometry) is synomyous with the concept behind fractals, particularly the IFS fractal used to describe natural objects by using mathematical models.
Here I strove to generate a work that emphasizes the concept of arcology: the fusion of grand structures with ecology. It is at once organic, yet mathematical.
Arcology was selected as one of the 150 finalists for the Los Alamos MainStreet Science and Math-based Art Contest.
